Mildred Kirby Smith

Mildred Kirby Smith, 89, wife of the late Frederick Glenn Smith, Sr. of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Sunday, August 21 , 2011.  The relatives and friends of Mildred Kirby Smith are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 in Hibben United Methodist Church at 11:00 am.  Entombment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Garden.  The family will greet friends at J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. Mildred was born on November 1, 1921 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, daughter of the late Dewey C. Kirby and Leona Benfield Kirby.  Mildred retired from Belk Department Stores in Charlotte, NC where she worked for many years in retail.  Among Mildred's many passions were her animal friends, gardening, fishing, anything to do with the beach, bridge, reading, and singing with her family. Mildred passed many of these passions on to her family. Her Christian life and many church activities were central to who she was.  She contributed her lovely voice to the choirs of many churches.  Most recently Mildred was a member of Hibben United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC. She is survived by her children, Patricia Smith Miller of Durham, NC, Frederick G. "Buddy" Smith, Jr, and his wife Anne, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Barbara J. Smith of Denver, CO and Michael David Smith and his wife Kitty, of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two sisters, Catherine Goodall of DeBarry, FL, and Ruth Kalkines of Palm Beach, FL, and many other family members. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC  29464
