Mildred Brown Simmons, 96, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2026. Born on May 4, 1930, from Mullins, South Carolina of the late Arbie and Alma Lewis Brown; she was the second oldest of seven children.

Growing up, Mildred learned early the value of hard work. She worked alongside her siblings on a farm and held a teenage job at the local drugstore. She later left Mullins for Charleston, where she worked as a telephone operator with Bell South and took business classes. After getting married she moved to Mt Pleasant where she raised her three children, Jane, Clifford and Wayne.

She became involved in the local community and was called upon to participate as well as lead projects that helped to enhance and improve the community such as the local PTA and the Mt Pleasant Garden Club, where she served as President for several years. Flowers planted by her and others are still enjoyed along the road, as well as throughout the East Cooper community today. A dedicated and enterprising businesswoman, she owned and managed Mt Pleasant Floral Nursery and later Carolina Gifts & Sea Shells, and Sand Dollar Mini Golf. Generations of children left her shop with happy memories, whether they got a hole in one, enjoyed a piece of taffy, or left with a special shell she helped them choose.

Mildred had a sense of adventure about her. Whether by boat, plane, or bus, she enjoyed seeing the world and meeting new people. She was always ready for a day trip and loved exploring nature, visiting local gardens and going down to the waterfront; she found beauty in everything. Mildred was an active member of The First Baptist Church of Mt Pleasant for more than 60 years and was known to be there anytime the doors were open, ready to teach Sunday School and to decorate the church for various occasions. She was always there for her church, and her church was always there for her; she appreciated that more than one could say. At home she could be found reading a devotional or listening to inspirational music.

Few people met Mildred without being touched by her strong, independent, outgoing personality, and presence. She freely shared her wisdom and was always ready to help others. She will no doubt be greatly missed by her family, friends, and community.

She leaves behind her children, Jane Garrett (Eugene Martinez) and Clifford H. Simmons III, her grandchild, Brandy Brown, great-grandchild, Addison Macavian, and her siblings, Earline Gaddy and Ray Brown. Mildred was preceded in death by her son, Allan Wayne Simmons, and siblings, Joseph Brown, Louise Floyd, Marilyn Harrelson, and Virginia Capps.
