Mildred "Mimi" Scharf

Mildred "Mimi" Scharf, 78, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Friday, March 17, 2023. A Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2023, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Mimi was born September 2, 1944, in Washington, DC, daughter of the late Mildred and George Scharf of Bethesda, Maryland. She was a graduate of Walter Johnson High School and attended Western Kentucky University and the University of Hawaii. She completed computer training and worked at NASA, before joining the Smithsonian Library System staff. She later joined the IT Department at Smithsonian where she served until retirement in 2002. She moved to Charleston in 2003 where she became actively involved in the community as president of the Women's Club of Charleston; board of directors member for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of South Carolina; volunteer with the Service Corps of Retired Executives; and president of the Charleston Chapter of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. She was named Woman of the Year by the Charleston Federation of Women's Clubs. In addition to serving as treasurer of the Memminger Hall Garden Club and On the Lakes at Harbor Place Homeowners Association, secretary of the Lake Francis Association and a member of the Garden Club of Charleston, Mimi established her own computer repair services.

She is survived by her sister, Susan Sewing (Norman); her niece, Sandy Sewing Pizzo, her nephew, Stephen Sewing (Jennifer); and 9 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sarah, and a nephew, Scott Sewing.
