Mildred Henderson Harju

Mildred Henderson Harju, 96, of Yonges Island, SC, passed away on Sunday, September 18, at her daughter’s residence.  She was born March 7, 1926, in Hendersonville, NC, daughter of the late Charlie Henderson and Olvie McMurray Henderson.  

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence John Harju, and three brothers, Charles Henderson, Boyd Henderson, and Bobby Henderson, and two sons-in-law, Raymond Biel, and Dr. David Yerger. 

Survivors include children: Patricia Biel, Marylin Yerger, David (Lynn) Harju, and Paul (Debbie) Harju.

Grandchildren:  Debra (Mike) Thomas, Darrin (Ian) Biel, Dina (Chad) Waltz, Michael (Becky) Yerger, Michelle (Kelly) DiSanti, Jonathan Yerger, Christopher Harju, Brian (Mary Grace) Harju, and Laura Harju.  

Great grandchildren: Andrew (Jadi) Thomas, Ashton (Joe) Jones, Caroline Thomas, Zakk Biel, Damon Waltz, Collette (Matthew) Duncan, Grant Yerger, Cheyenne DiSanti, Cash DiSanti, Madison Harju, Bryson Harju, Kaylee Kerchner, and Hunter Hoff.  

Also survived by her beloved Yorkie, Harvey, and semi-feral cat, Tigger. 

As a Naval aviator’s wife, she lived in many places over the years, as pilots were transferred every two years.  

Mildred was a consummate homemaker her entire life, always caring for others. In her prime, she enjoyed gardening, camping, bowling, and spending time with family.  Many family get-togethers and memories were made over the years at her West Ashley (Geddes Hall) home. An avid animal-lover, she never met a dog she didn’t like, or like her.

She was a life-long member at St. Mark United Methodist Church, active in the Women’s circle for many years. In her latter years, she enjoyed fellowship at the Ravenel UMC and Wesley Memorial UMC.  

Flowers will be accepted for graveside service at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Sunday, September 25, 2022, at 2PM. Memorials may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 5412 Highway 165, Hollywood, SC, 29449.

The family would also like to extend a special thanks to the Healthcare team at Hospice Amedisys for their care.
