Michele "Mike" Figliola, 90, of Hanahan, SC, died Sunday, January 16, 2011, peacefully at home.
Born March 5, 1920 in Rosito, Italy he was one of five children of Leonardo Figliola and Maria Finelli Figliola. He immigrated to the US at age 12. His military career included service during both World War II and the Korean War; Mr. Figliola received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal, the China Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Medal, the National Defense Medal, and the Good Conduct Award (6). He retired from the US Navy as a Boatswain's Mate First Class and was employed as a rigger at Charleston Naval Shipyard until 1973. He was a member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church.
Mr. Figliola was known for his love of God, family and country. He is survived by his beloved step-children: Miles A. Gooding, Jr. and his wife Linda of Summerville, SC, William L. Gooding and his wife Jacquie of Eutaville, SC, Melinda Gooding Gipe and her husband Tomm of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Vyonne Gooding Craven of Hanahan, SC; nephews, Leonard A. Figliola of Pinewood, SC and David Michael Figliola of Sugar Grove, OH; niece, Mary Jo Kenny of Lexington, KY; grandchildren: Barbara Puleo, Teresa Varella, William L. Gooding, Jr., Lindsay Sarah Gipe, Jodi Gelaro and Kevin Wiggins; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; widower to, Sarah Gooding Figliola and Grace Gentilcore Figliola; and also preceded in death by his siblings: Guiseppi Figliola of Reggio Emilia, Italy, Anthony Figliola of West Portsmouth, OH, Lucy Pettrelli of Toronto, Canada and Grace Romano of Beltsville, MD.
The Funeral Liturgy will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 3:00 PM. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell with military honors will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel Tuesday, January 18, 2011 between 6:00 and 8:00 PM with a prayer vigil at 6:00 PM.
