COL Michael Clinton Wilmer (US Army, Ret.), 60, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Fran Wilmer entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 17, 2020. A private memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Michael Wilmer was born October 1, 1960 in Freeport, New York, son of the late Edward Wilmer and Irene Cole. He was a 1982 graduate of The United States Military Academy, and served in the United States Army for over 26 years as a combat engineer and systems analyst. COL Wilmer earned two Masters degrees, one from the Air Force Institute of Technology in Operations Research in 1991 and another from the US Army War College in Strategic Studies in 2004. He served in leadership and staff positions at every level of the military from platoon to the Joint Staff.
Upon retiring from the Army, Michael spent nearly six years with consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington, DC. Following this, he spent two years as the Chief Operating Officer of a small risk management firm in New York City. Four years ago, Michael and Fran settled in Charleston, SC where he worked as an independent consultant on projects across the globe.
Michael's favorite activity was spending quality time with family and friends, sharing stories over a good meal with well-crafted cocktails. As he would often say: it's all about the stories. He was also an avid sports fan, most notably as a tortured devotee of the New York Mets and Jets. Michael thoroughly enjoyed music, fishing, playing games, and traveling with his wife Fran.
He is survived by his wife, Fran Wilmer of Charleston, SC; son, Brian Wilmer and daughter-in-law Michelle Doolittle of Vacaville, CA; and his granddaughter, Rosemary Joy Wilmer.
