Michael Searle Martin, 70, of Kiawah Island, South Carolina, died suddenly Saturday, October 29, 2016.
His funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, November 4, 2016 in Old St. Andrews Parish Church, 2604 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC. Burial services will be held at a later date in Hamilton, NY.
Michael was born August 11, 1946 in Rome, New York, son of the late Paul Martin and Mollie Martin. Michael graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1964, and Colgate University in 1969. He worked on behalf of his beloved Colgate University as a long-term member of both the Alumni Council and the Board of Trustees. He served his adopted community of Hamilton, NY by advising the Hamilton Initiative and was currently serving on the Hamilton Community Memorial Hospital Foundation Board. At home in South Carolina, Michael was a founder of The Golf Club at Briar's Creek, and a member of its Executive Board and Advisory Board. Michael was an Executive Vice President with AXA-Equitable Life Insurance and worked for nearly 40 years with the company until his retirement in 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Catherine Martin of Kiawah Island, SC; two sons, Derek Martin of Stanton, NJ, Jeremy Martin of Birmingham, AL; daughter, Emily Martin Potts (Frederic) of Kensington, CA; sister, Antoinette Peron of Litchfield Park, AZ and nieces Michelle Hill and Melissa Smith; sister-in-law, Jeanne Martin of Aiken, SC and nieces Kristen Martin and Katie Martin; and five grandchildren, Sabrina Martin, Lindsay Martin, Jacob Martin, Violet Potts, and Carter Potts. He was predeceased by his brother, Christopher Martin.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael S. '69 and Mary Catherine E. Martin Endowed Scholarship Fund, c/o Mrs. Patricia Caprio, Colgate University, 13 Oak Drive, Hamilton, NY 13346 or to the Community Memorial Hospital Foundation, c/o Mr. David Buran, Community Memorial Hospital, 150 Broad Street, Hamilton, NY 13346.
