Michael Jonathan Hanger, of Aiken, SC, husband of Janet Wilson Hanger, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 10, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel.
Born in Atlanta, GA, in 1969, Jonathan was loved by so many people for his kindness, friendliness, and wonderful sense of humor. He was a modern-day Renaissance man, a true raconteur, at ease with topics as varied as history, current events, theology, literature, aviation, medicine, and classical and choral music.
Jonathan earned degrees from Washington and Lee University (1992) and the Medical University of South Carolina (2001). From 2004 on, he worked as a Physician Assistant at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA. He also had lifelong entrepreneurial interests.
Jonathan's passion for aviation led him to earn his private pilot license while still an undergraduate, and he continued to take great pleasure in flying throughout his life, for many years in his own airplane.
Jonathan cultivated his many avocations in part by sharing them, joyfully, with others. Later in life, his fascination with beekeeping led him to earn his Master Beekeeper Certificate and to serve as President of the Aiken Beekeepers Association, where he was also the director and lecturer for the beginner beekeeping course for over a decade.
An active member of Cliffwood Presbyterian Church in Augusta, GA, Jonathan enjoyed teaching Sunday school and working in church outreach efforts. He served as an Elder there beginning in 2012. In particular, he treasured this Bible verse from Proverbs 3:3-4, "Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man."
In addition to his wife, Jonathan is survived by his parents, Bill and Beth Hanger, daughters, Clara Hanger and Lauren Hanger, and son, Michael Hanger, Jr.; sisters, Rebecca Smylie and Hannah Kennedy (David); and brothers, William Hanger (Laura) and Joshua Hanger; as well as in-laws, many cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, too numerous to name here but dearly loved.
His Funeral Service will be held Friday, July 16, 2021 at Saint James Anglican Church, 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, SC at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Cliffwood Presbyterian Church, 2525 Lumpkin Rd, Augusta, GA, at 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cliffwood Presbyterian Church, Augusta, GA.
