Merrily McCord Burnette

Merrily McCord Burnette of Summerville, S.C. went to heaven on October 12th, 2023. She fought a very courageous cancer battle with much grace and determination. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, October 19, 2023 in the Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting St., at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel.

Merrily was born on 10/18/1951, the daughter of the late Cowden Patton McCord and Martha Lou McCord. She graduated from Winthrop College. Upon graduation she began her teaching career at Knightsville Elementary teaching first grade.  Two years later, she moved to Summerville Elementary teaching first grade, where she positively influenced many young lives for over 30 years. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and she loved her Lord. 

She was warm, friendly, and incredibly giving to all of her family, friends, and neighbors. It is not surprising that she had many many friends. She dearly loved her family and friends and her grandsons were the light of her life. 

Merrily is survived by her husband of 41 years, George M. “Buster” Burnette; son Tyler Burnette (Ali); grandsons Tyler M. Burnette, Jack Burnette, and Clayton Burnette; brothers Tim McCord (Kathren); Gerry McCord (Suzanne); sister Tracy McCord Friedrichs (Mark); Aunt Edith Doyle; and special friend Georgia Dupree. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Many thanks to her loving son Tyler and his wife Ali, all medical professionals, and all hospice workers for taking such good care of her. In lieu of flowers her request was for donations to the Ronald McDonald House Charities Charleston at 81 Gadsden Street Charleston, SC 29401.
