Melba Fuchs Jones

January 23, 1918 — December 28, 2018

Melba Fuchs Jones, 100, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of William Dibrell Jones entered into eternal rest Friday, December 28, 2018. Her funeral service will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019 in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, One Bishop Gadsden Way at 11:00am. A reception will immediately follow in the Morse Activity room. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Melba was born January 23, 1918 in San Antonio, Texas, daughter of the late Albert Fuchs and Charlotte Lohmeyer Fuchs. She graduated from Memminger High School and attended nursing school at St. Francis hospital. She was a longtime member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two sons: William Dibrell Jones, Jr. of Folly Beach, SC and Michael Alan Jones of Wakefield, RI; daughter, Elise Jones Chapman of Plantation, FL; four grandchildren: William D. "Bucky" Jones III, Julie Mae Jones, Amy Guillont, and Seth Chapman; and five great-grandchildren.

Following Melba and Bill's marriage in 1938, her life as a military wife soon began, taking the family under her loving care, across the United States, where she added to her many life-long friendships. After retiring to Shalimar, Florida in 1979, Melba returned to Charleston in 2001 to be close to her family.

Melba believed in living life to the fullest. She could not pass a stray dog or cat without bringing it home or at least giving it a leftover tidbit from a restaurant. Ice cream could be eaten anytime of the day and she loved a good hot dog. She was a grand bargain hunter and passed that skill on to her family. Contests were meant to be entered and won, no matter if it was impractical suede luggage or a bright yellow radio. It also might have taken her forever to choose the right car, but she loved the wheels off that purple Lincoln Town Car. To the end of her life she was our lovely southern mama.

The family wants to thank the staff of Bishop Gadsden for the wonderful care they gave during the many years she resided there. Memorials may be made to Bishop Gadsden Employee Appreciation Fund 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412.
