McRoy "Mack" Canterbury, Jr., 72, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, husband of Patricia Irene Alexander died Friday, June 9, 2017. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 in Seacoast Church: Mount Pleasant Campus, 750 Long Point Road at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Friday, June 16, 2017 from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Mack was born March 18, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah, son of the late McRoy Canterbury and the late Laura Jean McDonald Canterbury.
Mr. Canterbury graduated from Michigan State University in 1968, with a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning. Mr. Canterbury's 37-year career in government service began in regional planning (Tri-County Regional Planning Commission in the state of Michigan, and the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments in South Carolina), followed by county planning (Charleston County Planning Department), and finally in county administration (Assistant Charleston County Administrator, Deputy County Administrator for Operations, and Chief Deputy County Administrator).
He served as lead administrative official in coordinating Charleston County assistance to Florida and Louisiana during Hurricane Andrew and North Carolina during Hurricane Fran.
Mr. Canterbury retired from Charleston County Government on October 12, 2002 and during a brief retirement, he became Vice Chair of the Charleston County Greenbelt Advisory Committee, and acted as both a member and then Chair of the Isle of Palms Planning Commission. He also volunteered with the Red Cross during the aftermath response to Hurricane Katrina and Wilma.
In July 2006, Mr. Canterbury returned to county government as the Charleston County Administrator and officially retired on January 19, 2009.
He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Charter Member since 1978, the American Planning Association, The American Society of Public Administrators, Governmental Finance Officers Association and the Low Country EMS Advisory Council Board.
Mack was a NRA licensed hand gun instructor and a licensed ham radio operator. He was an avid sailor, enjoyed fly fishing and playing darts, and had the opportunity to travel cross country twice on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
Mr. Canterbury "Mack" was truly a wonderful leader, mentor and friends to so many people. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Alexander of Isle of Palms, SC; son, Ben Canterbury (Kate) of Greer, SC; step-daughter, Melissa Wells of Mount Pleasant, SC; granddaughter, Riley Canterbury; grandson, Tyler Canterbury; five sisters, Patricia McGuire (Jim) of Palmdale, CA, Candice DeJournett (Billy) of Swartz Creek, MI, Vikki Crawford of New Castle, IN, Mary Watkins (Bobby) of Hideaway, TX, and Maxine Festial (Claude) of Austin, TX; brother, Greg Canterbury (Linda) of Charleston, SC.
