Maxine Dorothy McNary Feliciano

September 14, 1933 — November 21, 2021

Maxine Dorothy McNary Feliciano, 88, of Charleston, SC, wife of the late Darvin McRae and the late Victor Feliciano, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 21, 2021 after a brief illness. Her funeral service will be held Friday, December 3, 2021, in the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Kellogg, MN. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel and Abbott Funeral Home, Wabasha, MN.

Maxine was born September 14, 1933 in Kellogg, MN, the fifth of eight children born to the late Thomas McNary and Eleanor Gage McNary. She was a retired nurse from Roper Hospital. She did her nursing training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She then married Darvin McRae, who was in the United States Air Force. As an Air Force wife, she lived and worked in many places in the U.S., including Anchorage, AK and Blytheville, AR, before moving to North Charleston in 1967. After Darvin's death, she married Victor Feliciano in 1972, with whom she lived in North Charleston until 2019, when they moved to Brookdale Senior Living in West Ashley, Charleston.

Maxine had many interests. She was an avid reader, especially of the newspaper and romance novels. She was an excellent cook, who loved trying new recipes, and she collected cookbooks for that reason. She also loved knitting and crochet and gifted many friends and family members with her work. When she retired, she took up exercising and taught a water aerobics class for seniors. Most of all, she and Victor loved to travel, taking bus tours to almost every state in the U.S. as well as visiting much of Canada, Mexico, and most countries in Europe. Maxine was also a long-time, devoted member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church in Hanahan, SC and served with their St. Vincent de Paul Society visiting those in need. Two of her most treasured travel experiences were visiting the Vatican and the Holy Land with groups from her church.

Everyone who knew Maxine recognized her as strong and resilient. She survived 4 different types of cancer, 2 falls with a broken shoulder and a broken hip, each requiring surgery, and in 2020 a severe bout of Covid-19 with 6 weeks in the hospital and many months in rehab. Everyone who worked with her during that time also said that she was just such a nice person.

She is survived by her son, Thomas D. McRae, M.D. and his husband, Alex Mazon of Riverdale, NY; and brother, Richard McNary of Louisville, KY. She will also be missed by her dear friends, Sandra and Wayne Smith of Hanahan, SC, with whom she and Victor shared many of their travels and by her friends and staff at Brookdale West Ashley. Maxine was preceded in death by her son, Dennis McRae, as well as by her husbands, Darvin and Victor and her sisters Ruth McNary, Lorraine Johnson, Rose Ann Zgoda, Mary (Toni) Schouweiler, and Geraldine Roundy and a brother, Thomas McNary. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, Hanahan, SC or to the American Cancer Society.
