Matthew Thomas Townsend, Sr., 86, of Charleston, SC, husband of Mary Murray Wayne Townsend, entered into eternal rest on November 1, 2015. Matthew was born July 9, 1929, in Charleston, SC, son of the late Dr. John Ferrars Townsend and Sarah "Saida" Harleston Ball Townsend.
Matthew worked at Exxon Corp. for 34 years at the Charleston Terminal. Growing up he was an Airplane Spotter for the US Army Air Force under the Dept. of the Navy. He attended the Citadel and the University of Louisville. He was a member of the James Island Exchange Club, James Island Dance Club, and the James Island Yacht Club. He was a devoted member of Saint James Church on James Island and served as both Junior and Senior Warden on the Vestry, and other committees. He volunteered for many years at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Home, running BINGO for the residents for 22 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Moultrie Townsend Perry (Joe) of St. Mary's, Georgia; two sons, Matthew Thomas Townsend, Jr. (Charlotte) of Charleston, SC and Richard Jenkins Townsend (Pamela) of James Island, SC; seven grandchildren, Matthew Thomas Townsend, III (Amanda), Frances Lorraine Townsend Perazzola (Carl), Ashleigh Ruth Townsend McKnight (Duncan), Price Donald Richard Townsend, Sarah Elizabeth Perry, Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph Matthew Perry, and Nicole Bessinger Wilder (Bubba), and eight great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Bacot Alston Wayne, Jr. (Phyllis).
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Legare "Jill" Townsend Benton and three brothers, John "Jack" Ferrars Townsend, Jr., Dr. William "Billy" Ball Townsend, and Dr. James Moultrie Townsend.
His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, November 4, 2015, in the Saint James Church, 1872 Camp Road at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Churchyard. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 3, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.
