Mason Allen Hayden

February 11, 1949 — June 1, 2011

Entered into eternal rest on the evening of June 1, 2011, Mason Allen (Sam) Hayden, husband of Jessie Louise Lemacks Hayden of Summerville, SC.  The relatives and friends of Mr. & Mrs. Mason A. Hayden are invited to attend his funeral service in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 11 am.  Interment with military honors, Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.  Friends may call at Stuhr's Mt. Pleasant Chapel on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Sam was born February 11, 1949 in Petersburg, VA.  After high school graduation he served in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam War.  As an airplane mechanic and crew chief, Sam enjoyed Charleston so much that he chose the area as his home after being honorably discharged from the Air Force.  Sam began his career in the East Cooper area by opening up his very first construction company, Foundations of Charleston.  He also founded Hayden Home Builders in 1987 and East Cooper Brokers a few years later.  Sam spent his 35 year career in Mount Pleasant  building custom new construction homes and was well known in the industry.  His beautiful homes can be seen in Wakendaw Lakes, Hobcaw Creek Plantation, Dunes West, Snee Farm, Commonwealth, Planters Pointe and Rivertowne.  Sam was a hands-on builder who lived to see a finished home rise from an empty lot.

Sam was also active in several churches over the years.  He was a Sunday School Teacher, a Bus Ministry Director and a Music Director.  He was a church starter and helped get Shem Creek Baptist off the ground.  Sam and Jessie opened up the first Christian bookstore in Mount Pleasant in 1980 aptly named Christian Books and Supplies.  He supported school fundraisers every chance he could.

Sam was a well respected member of the community and was well liked by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.  Sam loved his family, fishing, fast cars, Elvis and animals.  He taught his daughters many life lessons over the years, instilling an unbridled lust for life that will live on for generations to come.  He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, of Summerville, SC; mother, Olleen Mason Hoyle of Colonial Heights, VA; two daughters, Samantha Hayden Suiter of Summerville, SC and Kate Hayden Jackson of Brunswick, GA; three grandchildren, William Samuel Hutchins of Georgetown, KY, Elliot Leigh Suiter of Summerville, SC, Kayden Grace Jackson of Brunswick, GA and one more grandbaby on the way.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christina Hayden Hutchins and his grandparents, Stanley Allen and Colleen Mason.

In his words:  "It's just another day in paradise."

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Sam may be made to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) at 501 Front Street, Norfolk,  VA 23510 or to Daystar Baptist Missions, P. O. Box 1193, Barboursville, WV 25504.
