Mary Blakely Whiteman, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Russell Irvine Whiteman, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, December 1, 2016. Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016, in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Mary was born April 19, 1930 in Orange, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Joseph William Blakely and Sidonie Stocklas Blakely. She was a retired Nursing Assistant and Anesthesia Technician. She was an active member of Trinity Bible Church and enjoyed serving as Historian, Librarian and in Vacation Bible School, Operation Christmas Child, Lydia's Ladies and visiting shut-ins.
She is survived by her two sons, James "Jim" George Whiteman (Mae) of Charleston, SC, and Raymond Lewis Whiteman (Mary Sue) of Maryville, TN; her daughter, Leslie Anne Portugal (Dave) of Vacaville, CA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her step-mother, Lil Blakely of Caldwell, NJ; three brothers, Richard Blakely (Audry) of North Caldwell, NJ, Frank Blakely of Fairfield, NJ, and James Blakely (Judy) of Cedar Grove, NJ; and three sisters; Charlotte Spalding (George), Eleanor Woomer (Nelson) of Parker, CO, Lily Brown of Lake Hopatcong, NJ; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers; Joseph Blakely of Caldwell, NJ, John Blakely (Frances) of Roseland, NJ and Robert Blakely (Helen) of North Caldwell, NJ, and one sister Ruth Craig (James) of Syracuse NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Trinity Bible Church Building Fund, 3589 Mary Ader Drive, Charleston, SC 29414.
