Mary Rhett Webb

August 20, 1923 — March 29, 2014

Mary Barnwell Rhett Sparkman Webb, 90 of Charleston, SC passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Her graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2014 in Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Avenue. Friends may call from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Monday, March 31, 2014 at 97 South Battery.

Mary Rhett was born on August 20, 1923 the oldest child of the late Carl Otto Witte Sparkman and Mary Rhett Simonds Sparkman. After a short stint at St. Anne's School in Charlottesville, VA, Mary Rhett graduated from Ashley Hall School in 1941 and thereafter, attended the College of Charleston. In her youth she was an avid horseback rider and won many jumping competitions. She was extremely well read and loved to write poetry. In 1942 she was published in Who's Who in Poetry in America. In 1946 she married the late Simons Vanderhorst Waring, Jr. of Charleston. In 1954 the couple moved to Long Island, NY, where they sailed competitively and won many local and long distance races with Mary Rhett at the helm. In 1966 Mary Rhett returned to her native Charleston and later met and married William Lester Webb, Jr. The couple enjoyed cruising the local waterways aboard their boat "Gumbo". She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina, the Junior League of Charleston and St. Michael's Church.

She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence Dawson Waring (Jan) of Johns Island, SC and Bradish Johnson Waring (Amy) of Charleston, SC; three granddaughters, Amelia Simonds Waring Walker (Will) of Columbia, SC, Mary Barnwell Rhett Waring of Charleston, SC and Louisa Vanderhorst Waring of Dubai, UAE; a great granddaughter, Margaret Calhoun Simonds Walker; a brother, Edward Heriot Sparkman (Merle) of Charleston, SC; a nephew and three nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, William Lester Webb, Jr.

The family is extremely grateful for the loving care and kindness provided to Mary Rhett by Hospice of Charleston and the wonderful staff at Bishop Gadsden.
