Mary Murray Wayne Townsend, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Matthew Thomas Townsend entered into eternal rest Tuesday, August 15, 2017. Her funeral service will be held at the graveside Saturday, August 19, 2017 in Saint James Church Yard, 1872 Camp Road at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Friday in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Mary was born June 5, 1931 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Bacot Allston Wayne and Lucille Meggett King Wayne. She was a graduate of Memminger High School and was a member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. Mary enjoyed making Charleston bonnets for 82 Church Street and was a master gardener and seamstress. She was a longtime member of Saint James Church where she served as head of the Altar Guild, and was Junior Warden, and served on various other committees for the church.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Moultrie Townsend Perry (Joe) of St. Mary's, Georgia; two sons: Matthew Thomas Townsend, Jr. (Charlotte) of Charleston, SC and Richard Jenkins Townsend (Pamela) of James Island, SC; seven grandchildren: Matthew Thomas Townsend, III, Frances Lorraine Townsend Perazzola (Carl), Ashleigh Ruth Townsend McKnight (Duncan), Price Donald Richard Townsend, Sarah Elizabeth Perry, Petty Officer 2nd Class Joseph Matthew Perry, and Nicole Bessinger Wilder (Bubba); eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Bacot Alston Wayne, Jr. (Phyllis).
