Mary Lourie Rittenberg, 89, of Charleston, SC, widow of Dr. Alvin Rittenberg entered into eternal rest Thursday, May 25, 2017. Her funeral service will be held graveside in Brith Shalom Beth Israel Cemetery (Maryville) on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Mary was born December 12, 1927 in St. George, South Carolina, daughter of the late Louis Lourie and Anne Friedman Lourie Simon. She was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia where she was a member Phi Beta Kappa. Mary was a retired High School Guidance Counselor. She was a very active member of the Charleston Jewish community including Hadassah and BSBI Sisterhood.
Mary is survived by her son, Sam Rittenberg (Evelyn) of New York, NY; daughter, Sadye Beth Waldenberg (Alan) of Pound Ridge, NY; son, Harris Rittenberg (Meryl) of Jacksonville, FL; son, William Rittenberg of Atlanta, GA; son, Michael Rittenberg of New York, NY; her nine adored grandchildren: Matthew (Danielle), Seth, Joshua (Franny Goldberg), Luria, Evan, Shira, Lucy, Hannah and Noah; cherished great-grandson, Cole Alexander Waldenberg; two sisters-in-law: Nancy Lourie and Susan Lourie; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mary was predeceased by beloved siblings, Sol Lourie (Toby), Mick Lourie, Herbert Lourie (Betty), Isadore Lourie and Sara Gordon (Sherman).
