Mary Virginia Gasser Rawl, 97, of Johns Island, South Carolina, widow of Alfred E. Rawl, Jr. M.D., entered into eternal rest Tuesday, April 16, 2019. The family will receive friends Friday, April 19, 2019, at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Her funeral service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019, at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
Mary, daughter of the late Victor Valentine Gasser and Eva Jordan Gasser, was born September 21, 1921, in Cottageville, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Ashley Hall and Winthrop College. Mary was a member of the Charleston Country Club, where she played golf for years in the Nine Holers. She loved gardening and was a member of the Charleston Area Garden Club, SC Rose Society, and the Magnolia Garden Club. Mary was also a long-standing member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Sea Island Republican Women, and she ran for the SC House of Representatives in 1964. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to many card playing clubs. Mary touched many lives with the constant cards and letters she wrote throughout her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Renee Rawl Duffy (Jim) of Tucker, GA, and her four sons; A. Victor Rawl, Jr., (Laura) of Charleston, SC, M. Brian Rawl of Charleston, SC, M. Bruce Rawl (Elizabeth) of Edisto Island, SC, and Dana A. Rawl (Jane) of Wagner, SC. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; A. Victor Rawl, Jr., C. Colin Duffy, Francie Rawl, Adeline Rawl, Eliza Rawl, Jordan Rawl, Garrett Rawl, and three great-grandchildren; Beckett, Simmons, and Addison. She was predeceased by her grandson, Michael Rawl.
