Mary Elizabeth Deer Mellichamp, 96, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of the late Henry Laurens Mellichamp, Jr. died Tuesday, March 14, 2017. Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday, March 17, 2017 in the Mount Pleasant Chapel from 4:00 until 6:00 pm.
Mary was born December 28, 1920 in Allendale, South Carolina, daughter of the late Dallas S. Deer, Sr. and the late Mary Elizabeth Allen Deer. She graduated from Menninger High School in 1937 and attended the College of Charleston, Class of 1942. She met Henry Laurens Mellichamp, Jr. and they were married on June 6, 1940 and became a homemaker and loved to spend time with her family and friends. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant, Past Matron of Order of Eastern Star and Treasurer of Alhambra Chapter #60 for 30 years. She was also Past Royal Matron (1981) of Lawrence Howell Court No. 7.
She is survived by three sons, Douglas R. Mellichamp, Sr. (Susan) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Henry Laurens Mellichamp, III (Paula) of McClellanville, SC and Dallas Derald Mellichamp (Kathy) of Round Rock, TX; nine grandchildren, Pam M. Wilson (Mills) of West Columbia, SC, Penny M. Fryar of North Charleston, SC, Patty M. Dennison (Mike) of Lynn Haven, FL, Doug Mellichamp, Jr. (Michaela) of Sullivan's Island, SC, Tim Mellichamp (Tressy) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Shannon M. Ivey (Robert) of Tarpon Springs, FL, Hank Mellichamp of Santa Barbara, CA, Sarah M. Dean (Charles) of McClellanville, SC and Callie Mellichamp of Round Rock, TX; sixteen great grandchildren and one brother, Dallas S. Deer, Jr. of Mount Pleasant, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Mary Deer, husband, Henry on January 17, 2002, son, Francis Allen Mellichamp on December 14, 2014 and brothers, Thomas O. Deer, James M. Deer and Howard Deer.
Mary had a saying she repeated daily: "Jesus I would be like thee, Look from heaven and pity me, Tho so full of sin I am, Make me now thy little lamb." God bless everybody.
