Mary Alice Carothers Marshall, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away peacefully at her home in the Franke Pavillion in Franke at Seaside on Monday, January 2, 2012. The relatives and friends of Mary Alice Marshall are invited to attend her Memorial Service on Thursday, January 5, 2012, in Rodenberg Chapel in Franke at Seaside at 10:30 am. Inurnment will be private in the Franke Home Columbarium. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Mary Alice was born on August 1, 1930, in Creston, Iowa, daughter of the late Leslie D. and Maxine Clare Carothers. She was one of three children and was raised in Corning, Iowa. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College and graduated with a B.A. from San Diego State University. There she met Naval Officer Paul Ramon Salgado and together they had two daughters. She held her first teaching position in 1950 with a third grade class in Van Wert, Iowa. Mary Alice loved to travel. As a young married woman, she lived in Okinawa. She also lived in various locations on the East Coast and later traveled in South America. She raised her children and spent most of her life in Norfolk, VA, where she was an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal). She relocated to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 2005 and made her home at Franke at Seaside. She was an avowed Democrat and took great pleasure in gardening, books, theatre and bridge.
Mary Alice will be affectionately remembered by her daughters Cynthia Marie Havens and her husband Morgan, and Lesly Salgado Davidson and her husband Scott; her brother Dick Carothers and his wife Helen; her sister-in-law Donna Carothers; her grandchildren George Fitzhugh Shipp, Jr., Alice Clark Shipp, Natalie Scott Davidson and Madelaine Clare Davidson as well as many other friends and family who were lucky to know her.
