Mary Smith Malone joined her husband, James B. Malone and her son, James B. Malone, Jr. on April 27, 2011. Mary was the youngest of nine children: four brothers and four sisters that have all gone before her. She was born in 1923 in Taylors, SC but spent most of her life in Charleston, SC. She valued education and had two college degrees: one in business and the other in education. She began a scholarship for environmental engineers at the University of SC in her husband's and son's name. She taught second grade at Oakland Elementary. She was a volunteer at Middleton Place Gardens for several years. She and her beloved husband enjoyed sailing in their boat, Serapis, in the Charleston Harbor and on their many trips in the Caribbean. They also loved camping. They truly enjoyed each other's company and living life to the fullest.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda M. Matthews and her husband, William Elbert Matthews of Johns Island and a granddaughter, Laura M. Newkirk of Goose Creek and her husband Lonnie Newkirk and their son, her great grandson, Parker James Newkirk.
Funeral services for Mary will be held at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11am. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel Sunday, May 1, 2011 from 5 pm until 7 pm.
