Mary Jane Hegley, 76, of Hanahan, SC, the beloved wife of John Howard Hegley, DDS died Tuesday, December 11, 2012. She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the daughter of late George H. Wilbar, Jr. and the late Edith M. Wilbar.Mrs. Hegley, R.N. was graduated from the Lankenau Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA where she also was employed as a psychiatric nurse and head nurse. After marrying Dr. Hegley, she became a full-time Navy Dental Corp wife and mother. Mrs. Hegley loved and was very active in her church where she sang in the choir and previously served as an organist. She enjoyed growing and caring for daylilies having almost 800 varieties in her garden during the height of her hobby. In 2007, she became Blue Bell Ice Cream's 100th Anniversary "Taste of the Country Flavor Contest" winner with her entry of Southern Hospitality.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dr. John Howard Hegley of Hanahan, SC, and daughter, Amy Hegley Knight (Coleman, predeceased) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her two brothers George Wilbar, III (Marion) of Norristown, PA and Robert Wilbar (Jan) of Leesburg, FL; her sister Eleanor Fennell (William, predeceased) of Leesburg, FL; her two grand-daughters: Deanna Mickey Knight Robertson (Delon) of Ravenel, SC and Melissa Knight Stanley (George) of Summerville, SC; her seven great-grandchildren: Daniel, Leeanna, and Madison Robertson of Ravenel, SC and Ryan, Hannah, Cameron, and Curtis Stanley of Summerville, SC; her numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and her adopted daughter Catharine Bowers.
A memorial service will be held in St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 200 South Goose Creek Boulevard, Goose Creek, SC, Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 10:00 am. A reception will follow from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Community Center, 510 Saint James Avenue, Goose Creek, SC 29445. Arrangements by J. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Hegley's name to a charitable organization of choice.
