It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Sabin Floyd, who departed this world surrounded by her three sons on 8 March 2025 at the age of 85 at her Edisto Island home. Mary was a beloved Mother, Sister, Friend, a cherished member of our community, a proud Charlestonian, and a beacon of kindness and inspiration to all who knew her.
Born on February 27, 1940, in Charleston to the late Guy Earl and Ruth Koger Sabin of Walterboro S.C., Mary lived a full Lowcountry life living in the St. Andrew’s Parish and on Edisto Island. Mary lived most of her childhood enjoying the woods and wetlands on a family farm and Stono Park area of St. Andrews Parish. Growing up, she and her family were active members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of St. Andrews Parish High School in 1958, then began a career as a medical transcriptionist for a Cardiac Specialist and then the Medical University of South Carolina. Her love for the Lowcountry was exhibited in her commitment and work with Edisto Open Land Trust and the Edisto Island Museum, only to name a few of her exploits.
Mary found joy in communing in the nature of the woods, gardening, crabbing and shrimping. She will be forever remembered for sharing these passions with her children, children’s friends and her grandchildren. She loved boating and kayaking to be close to the rivers and creeks where she found solace and peace. She would always comment on swimming in what she called the “silk texture” of the Stono river.
Mary leaves behind three sons, Daniel (Sharon), Andrew (Elizabeth) and Patrick; her four grandchildren who she cherished, Savannah, Christopher, Hannah, and Olivia; and three brothers Guy E. Sabin, David Sabin, and Robert Sabin.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 14, 2025 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held Saturday, March 15, 2005 at the The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island at 11:00 am. Interment at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in Walterboro S.C. will be a private family event at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Edisto Island Open Land Trust or the Wounded Warriors Project in Mary’s honor.
Though Mary is no longer with us, her legacy of love and compassion will live in our hearts forever.
