Mary Catherine "Kathy"
Murray
November 28, 1946 – June 1, 2026
Mary Catherine (Kathy) Murray (née Kelly), 79, was born on November 28, 1946, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and passed away on June 1, 2026, in South Carolina. She was the daughter of William P. Kelly and Rose Mary Tackney Kelly. Kathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas G. Murray, M.D., and her sisters, Margaret Ellen Seery and Rosemary Kelly. She is survived by her children, Timothy G. Murray; Mollie E. Murray and husband Andrew J. Korzeniewski; and Keith P. Murray.
Kathy was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, and Marywood University in Scranton, where she prepared for a career in education. She began her professional life as an elementary school teacher in the Philadelphia School District. Following the birth of her first child, she devoted herself fully to raising her family. After Thomas passed away unexpectedly at a young age, Kathy independently raised her three children with strength and love.
After seeing her youngest child into adulthood, Kathy “retired” to the beach community of Seabrook Island, South Carolina. She loved coastal life and became an active member of the Seabrook community. She enjoyed her time on the island and volunteered with the Seabrook Island Turtle Patrol, the Seabrook Island Natural History Group, and Special Olympics. She treasured her time on the beach she called home.
Kathy loved cooking and entertaining friends and family. She will be remembered for her warmth, independence, and devotion to her family.
Memorial services will be decided at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island, 130 Gardeners Circle, PMB K, Johns Island, SC 29455, or online at Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island Donations.
