Mary Jean Byrd
February 11, 1935 — September 20, 2018
Mary Jean Byrd, 83, of Ravenel, South Carolina, wife of Robert F. Byrd entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 20, 2018. Her Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street at 11:00 AM.
Jean was born February 11, 1935 in Lakeland, Florida, daughter of the late Lawrence Malcolm Giddens and Alice Greenameyer Giddens. She retired from Heffron, Ingle, McDowell and Cooper as a commercial insurance producer and had been in the insurance field for many years.
She started her working career in the Charleston County School System as a librarian, then high school secretary, and finally Superintendent Secretary. Her positions with the school system were not just by chance, she wanted to be involved with her children's education in some way. It was thought that she took those positions to make it difficult for her children to cut school, and of course it did.
Jean is survived by her loving husband Robert (Bob) F. Byrd, her son Robert Alan Byrd (Rob) and fiancé Marietta Condon of Johns Island, her daughter Lynn Byrd McClure and husband Stuart McClure of Spartanburg SC, Nieces, nephews, and many friends. Jean always encouraged her children to bring their friends home and through that practice, many true and lasting friendships developed. Jean was a second mother to many and she and Bob were adopted grandparents even though they have none of their own. Jean will be missed by so many.
