Entered into eternal rest on the morning of October 27, 2010, Dr. Marvin Starr Murdaugh, Jr., husband of Cathie McElveen Murdaugh. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Marvin Starr Murdaugh, Jr. are invited to attend the funeral service of the former, Sunday, October 31, 2010 in Harbor View Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm. The burial will be private.
Dr. Murdaugh, Jr. was born April 16, 1942, in Charleston, SC, the son of Marvin Starr Murdaugh and Eunice Bates Murdaugh. He attended Porter Military Acadamy and Porter Gaud, and was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1964. He was a graduate from Medical University of South Carolina, Class of 1969. After receiving his M.D., Marvin was commissioned by the U.S. Army to serve as a Brigade Surgeon in Vietnam under the 25th Infantry Division. During his tour, he received an Army commendation and two Bronze Stars. Upon his return he completed his residency in family medicine and continued to practice in the Charleston area until 2005. During this time, he helped start up a private practice with Dr. Fleet Hassell and Dr. David Egleston. He also served in the Charleston Air Force Base Medical Clinic and served injoint with Dr. Barry Weisglass as the physician for all City of Charleston employees. He was a member of Charleston Medical Society and the American Academy of Family Practice. In 2005, Marvin suffered a spinal cord injury making him a C3 quadriplegic. He continued to remain an active member of the medical community and served on the SC Spinal Cord Injuries Association and the Ethics Committee at Roper St. Francis. Outside of medicine, Marvin was an avid aviator, an interest he passed on to his son. He was also a meteorologist enthusiast and served on the Charleston County Disaster Preparedness Team. He was a member of Harbor View Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and a member of the ramp building team.
He is survived by his beloved wife Cathie of Charleston, SC; son: Marvin Starr Murdaugh, III and his wife Laura of Charleston, SC; daughter: Amanda Catherine Murdaugh of Charleston, SC; brother: William Rhett Murdaugh of Charlotte, NC.
