Marvette Colson Hazel, 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Howard Adams Hazel entered into eternal rest Friday, October 21, 2022. The family will receive friends Monday, October 24, 2022 in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Her Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2022 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 11:00 am. Interment, following will be in Bedon Baptist Church Cemetery, Walterboro, SC at 3PM.
Marvette was born April 1, 1939 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Callis Hyrne Colson and the late Thelma Crosby Colson. Raised on Johns Island, she was an accomplished pianist and member of First Baptist Church of Johns Island growing up and graduated as valedictorian from the original St. Johns High School, Class of 1957. As a 1961 Furman University graduate to where she was awarded an academic and music scholarship and was a member of the Furman University Marching and Concert Bands (tuba), she enriched many students' lives through her passion of learning during her tenure as a teacher for 33 years in the Charleston County School District, teaching at Albemarle Elementary, Stono Elementary, Baxter-Patrick Elementary, and Harbor View Elementary. A beloved wife of 58 years and devoted mother/grandmother, 14-year cancer survivor, and avid book reader, Marvette also remained a member of Citadel Square Baptist Church until her departure from this world.
She is survived by her two daughters, Tiffaney (Mike) Hazel-Faust of Charleston, S.C., and Kim (Greg) Hazel-Lohr of Lexington, S.C.; three grandchildren, Logan Ashley Faust and Michael Hunter Faust of Charleston, S.C., and Callie Rene' Lohr of Lexington, S.C.; a "special sister of the heart" Joyce (Don) Mustain of Houston, TX.; and numerous other family members.
