Chief Warrant Officer Martin Greenlee Gipe, Sr, USN (Ret.), 93, of Charleston, SC, widower of Lola Bull Gipe, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 4, 2013. His memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013, in J. HENRY STUHR., INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, at 4:00 pm. Burial services will be held later in Eutawville Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel one hour prior to the service.
Martin was born June 11, 1920 in Cody, Wyoming, son of the late Clayton Marion Gipe and the late Mary Martin Gipe Ebert. He was a retired Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Navy. Martin was a veteran of World War II and a Pearl Harbor survivor assigned to the USS Nevada. He earned his bachelors degree in accounting from the Charleston Southern University. Martin was a former member of the Charleston Elks Lodge, a member of the Charleston Power Squadron, Wragg Barony Hunt Club and Epworth United Methodist Church, James Island.
He is survived by two sons: Michael Gipe (Helen) of Johns Island; Murray Gipe (Laura) of Louisville, KY; two sisters, Audrey Kelso of Quakertown, PA and Mary Ann Clark of Green Valley, AZ; step-sister, Hazel McJunkin of Cody, WY; and seven grandchildren: Martin G. Gipe III, Amy Stanfield, Christopher M. Gipe, Dr. Ryan M. Gipe, Jessica Spalding, Cara Sullivan and Kristin Sullivan. Martin was predeceased by a son, Martin G. Gipe, Jr.
