Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of July 27, 2010, Martin Abrams, husband of Lilla Wharton Abrams. Residence, Charleston, South Carolina. All services will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.
Mr. Abrams was born on May 9, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Nathan and Fannie Steinberg Abrams. He was a World War II D-Day Army Veteran and was very proud to have served his country. Mr. Martin was attached to General Patton's 3rd Army in WW II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and took part in the liberation of Buchenwald Concentration Camp. In a recent newspaper article, Mr. Martin said, "We were advancing through a town and the smell of death was everywhere. The camp we were approaching was Buchenwald. I couldn't believe my eyes! I know there are people who say the Holocaust didn't happen. But you can't tell me that. Because I was there. I saw the bodies stacked up. And the blue-titled rooms. The hooks for clothing. There was another door and there were the gas chambers. I was there!" Mr. Martin was a true American hero and member of the "Greatest Generation". Mr. Abrams formerly owned and operated a fishing store and was a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the 29th Division Association and the American Legion, and was of the Jewish faith.
Surviving are his wife Lilla of Charleston; son, Robert Peiffer and his wife Susie of Charleston; three grandsons, Robert Peiffer, Gary Peiffer, and Ean Wolf.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Communities In Schools, 1090 East Montague Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
