Martha Ann Neel Claxton

Martha Ann Neel Claxton, 86, of Isle of Palms, SC, wife of Charles Thomas Claxton, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2020 at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, SC.

Born August 5, 1934 in Atlanta, GA, Martha was the daughter of the late Dr. Malcolm M. Neel and Martha Dillard Neel. She married Charles Thomas Claxton on August 4, 1956 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta, GA. During their 64 years of marriage, they raised two cherished sons. Martha was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivan's Island, had a deep faith, felt a close relationship with the Lord, and had no fear of death.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Dr. Samuel Nicholas Neel and Malcolm M. Neel, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Charles Thomas Claxton, Jr. (Kathy) and Samuel Malcolm Claxton (Amy); and five grandchildren, Stormie Nicole Claxton, Charles Thomas Claxton III, Zebulin Andrew Claxton, Kristina Claxton Lowe (John), and Samuel Malcolm Claxton, Jr.

Martha graduated from Emory University's Crawford W. Long School of Nursing in Atlanta, attended the University of Georgia in Atlanta and Lander University in Greenwood, SC. She enjoyed a varied and challenging career, culminating as a nationally certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. She retired as a supervisor with the Trident County Mental Health Center in Charleston. Her most appreciated honor was the generous recognition made by the National Institute of Mental Health for her work with the chronically mentally ill.

Martha loved all wildlife, the beauty of nature, her many pets and art. She enjoyed painting as a hobby, painting pictures of her grandchildren and landscapes. She researched the genealogy of the families of her husband and her own. She authored her memoirs, "Making My Mark", as a gift to her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM October 24,2020 at the Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivan's Island. The Church will have limited capacity and all attendees will be required to wear masks.
