Martha “Marcy” Evans Anderson, 80, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, died Saturday, July 13, 2024 after a short illness. Her celebration of life will be held Friday, August 16, 2024 in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 11:00 am. The family will be available for greetings from 10:00 am.
Marcy was born March 21, 1944 in Mount Vernon, New York, daughter of Elwood Robert Anderson and Lydia Evans Anderson. She grew up in Wilton, Connecticut and attended Laycock Country Day School and Bryn Mawr College, from which she graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in art history. She married soon after graduation, and moved with her first husband to Guam, where he was stationed as a naval officer during the Vietnam War. There, she taught elementary school on base. Following the war, Marcy and her husband settled in Annapolis, Maryland where their two children Peter and Anne were born. She was active in the Junior League in Annapolis and had a wonderful circle of friends who remain family friends to this day.
In 1981, Marcy moved to Arlington, Virginia and began working as a banker. She rose through the ranks from teller to loan officer and enjoyed living near Washington where her sister Nancy also lived and where she enjoyed the museums, theaters, restaurants and multitude of cultures, experiences she joyfully shared with her children.
Marcy moved to Mount Pleasant in 2001 to be near her first grandchild, to visit the places she visited as a child with her father’s family, and to start her last, and favorite chapter in life. She adored Charleston and served in civic roles with the Preservation Society of Charleston and the English-Speaking Union. She had a fabulous circle of friends with whom she socialized regularly. She spent the last 8 years with her wonderful partner, Nelson Hicks, traveling, cooking, visiting with family, seeing friends, volunteering and sharing their lives. Together, they were active subscribers to the Charleston Symphony and Chamber Music Charleston as well as contributors to the ACBA (American College of the Building Arts). These were some of her best and happiest years.
She is survived by her partner, Nelson Hicks; son, Peter William Hurgronje (Lisa); daughter, Anne Snouck-Hurgronje; sister, Mary Resnick (Miles); five grandchildren: Carter Owings-Hurgronje, Sydney Gaskin, Gabriel Gaskin, Rye Strand and Gabriel Strand; and three loving nieces and nephews, Andy Resnick, Caroline Ellington and Philip DiModica. She is predeceased by her sister Nancy Lewis DiModica.
Memorials may be made to the Preservation Society of Charleston, 147 King Street, Charleston, SC 29401 in the name of the Marcy Anderson Fund.
