Mark Scarbrough, died peacefully at his residence, after a nine year marathon battle with metastatic cancer on Wednesday, January 11, 2012.
Mark, the son of a naval officer and registered nurse, was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. The family soon moved to outside London, England, where Mark started school. When Mark was nine, they moved to James Island, South Carolina, where Mark attended Stiles Point Elementary and Fort Johnson High School. Mark earned the rank of Eagle Scout at Troop #76, James Island. After obtaining his bachelor's degree in music from Furman University, Mark traveled the world from Istanbul to Anchorage for over ten years, working in the National Parks and playing his music in the street. He finally settled down to Charleston, working at Blackbaud soon after the business opened. In 2001, Mark started his own web design company, Illumicom. Even while battling constantly with cancer, Mark joined the Sertoma Club of Charleston organization and was voted Sertoman of the year Mark was also a committed member of Dragon Boat Charleston, where he found great joy paddling with his friends.
Mark was predeceased by his mother, Betty Scarbrough. He is survived by wife Sheila and their two guard dogs Trouble and Einstein; his father, Vernon Scarbrough his wife Kay; brother, Martin, all of James Island. Sister, Stephanie Korenek and her husband Ken; niece, Kelly; nephew, Jason of Arlington, Texas; Step-sister, Kristy Judd of James Island and her children Quentin Bork and Devon Davis.
Services will be held in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 2:00 pm. The family will received friends at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel Friday between 5:00 – 7:00 pm. A celebration of Mark's life will be 3 to 6 pm at the James Island Yacht club.
