Marion W. Oliver

January 23, 1919 — August 30, 2012

Entered into eternal rest the morning of August 30, 2012, Marion Washington Oliver, Sr., husband of Paytie Sue Snellgrove Oliver of Columbia, SC and formerly of North Charleston and Hanahan, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. & Mrs. Marion W. Oliver, Sr. are invited to attend his memorial service in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at 7 pm. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. The interment was held in Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Timmonsville, SC.

Mr. Oliver, known to many as "Chief", was born on January 23, 1919 in the Sardis Community of Florence County, SC the third of four children and the only son to Henry Leland Oliver and Vera Stokes Oliver.

He graduated from Sardis High School and Newberry College. During the 1940-41 school year he was a teacher and athletic coach at Pamplico High School. He was employed on May 12, 1941 as a Supply Clerk at Raybestos Manhattan only to resign 18 months later, October 31, 1941 to serve as a Captain the US Army Chemical Corps attached to the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific Campaign. Beach landings include the islands of Pelileau and Okinawa. During WWII Mr. Oliver was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star, several Campaign ribbons and battle stars. On January 2, 1946 he returned to what was then known as GARCO and became General Manager of the company.

He was former President of Raybestos Manhattan, Rotary Club, Manufactures Club, Trident United Way and Otranto Garden Club.

Just a few of the contributions made to the community and business world include Past General Manager of Raybestos Manhattan, Past President of the North Charleston Rotary Club and the Charleston Manufacturers Club; North Charleston Board of Advisors of the First National Bank of SC; past member of the Board of Directors of both the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce and the SC State Chamber of Commerce; served on the Advisory Committee of the Charleston Rehabilitation Workshop, Community Relations Committee, Berkeley County Vocational Advisory Council and was a Past Advisory Board member of Junior Achievement of Greater Charleston.

Mr. Oliver has always given generously of his time to assist in fund raising drives for such community organizations as the United Way, Heart Fund, Junior Achievement of Greater Charleston and many others.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Paytie Sue Oliver; son, Marion Oliver Jr. (Donna); daughter, Marianne Blanck (Michael); grandchildren: Marion Oliver III (Melanie), Ashleigh Thomas (Greg), David Gwynne-Vaughan (Margeaux) and Annie Gwynne-Vaughan (Lauren); great-grandchildren: Sarah Ann Oliver, Mary Caroline Oliver, Isabel Thomas, Christian Oliver Thomas and Henry Bernard; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Angie Lou Weidman, Theresa Marks and Margurite Bailey.
