Marion Otto Martens, 90, passed peacefully on Saturday, May 15, 2021, surrounded by family.
Otto was born March 11, 1931 in Charleston, SC to the late Louis Henry Martens, Sr. and Rosalie Stramm Martens. Otto served in the Air Force during the Korean War and then later graduated from Newberry College, where he met the love of his life, Joan Campbell. Otto and Joan married and moved to the Isle of Palms. He devoted many hours to coaching youth sports at the Charleston Mitchell Playground and the Isle of Palms Recreation Department. He spent many hours doing the things he loved such as fishing, shrimping, gardening and growing the best tomatoes on the island. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, Otto was preceded in death by his siblings Louis Martens and Aline Hutchison. He is survived by his wife, Joan Campbell Martens, his children and their spouses, Hal (Melissa) Martens and Rosa (Baird) Sanders; his sister, Rosie (Clarence) Derrick; and his grandchildren, Anna (Jonathan), Clayton, Carter, Liza, Darby, Sully, and Cooper.
A private graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm on Monday, May 17, 2021 at Bethany Cemetery in Charleston, SC. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
