Entered into eternal rest on the morning of August 19, 2011, Marion Jervey Hanckel, Sr., husband of Carol Denton Hanckel. Residence, North Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Jervey Hanckel, Sr., are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Monday, August 22, 2011, 2:00PM, at Grace Episcopal Church. Entombment, Grace Columbarium. A reception will follow the service in Hanahan Hall.
Marion was born on December 14, 1927 in Charleston, SC, the son of Richard W. Hanckel, Sr. and Ellen Jervey Hanckel. He attended the College of Charleston majoring in English, with a love of Shakespeare and was an honorary member of ATO Fellowship. Marion served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. He was a Chief Building Inspector with the City of North Charleston.
He previously served as Junior and Senior Warden at Church of Holy Communion, a member of Grace Episcopal Church, a former member of The German Friendly Society, the Charleston Rotary and the Sea Island Yacht Club. Marion loved to fly and was a certified Flight Instructor.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol of North Charleston, SC; one son, Marion Jay Hanckel, Jr., of Charleston, SC; daughter: Nicole Hanckel of Charleston, SC; and two grandchildren: Ty Hanckel and Griffin Taisarsky. He is predeceased by his brother, Dr. Richard W. Hanckel, Jr. Marion will be deeply missed by all of his feline companions, especially Percy.
