Marion Tucker Altman, Jr., 79, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Jenny "Susie" Harris Altman entered into eternal rest Monday, September 24, 2023. His memorial service will be held Friday, December 1, 2023 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service.
Tucker was born June 2, 1944 in Anderson, South Carolina, son of the late Marion Tucker Altman, Sr. and the late Henri Frances Shirley Altman. He grew up in Anderson, SC and Bradenton, FL and graduated from Manatee High School with a track scholarship to Manatee Junior College. Then at the University of South Carolina he met his wife Susie on a blind date. While he was there he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Beta Chapter and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Tucker's long and successful career as a RPh began in Walterboro and soon brought him to Charleston's South Windemere Pharmacy for 10 years. He then opened his own drug store, Medical Plaza Pharmacy, at North Trident. He moved to the corporate world and developed the Durable Medical Equipment division at Geer Drug Company and later at ALCO Standard. Tucker was a people person and wanted more interaction with customers so he joined Eckerd Drugstores working in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.
When his sons Tuck and Marty played in youth soccer, Tucker was instrumental with soccer fields being built in Mt. Pleasant. He and a small group of Mt. Pleasant residents had the foresight that growth was inevitable and created ASPEC, an Association for Sensible Plans in East Cooper. He was also recognized in Charlie Hall's, (a local and popular television personality), "Hall of Fame" for his extraordinary deed at the pharmacy saving a dog's life!
Tucker and Susie supported the Carolina Gamecocks and regularly attended games. They traveled with his sister in law and brother in law to Europe and sailed in the British Virgin Islands, two of his favorite vacations. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and golf. He devoted many years to youth soccer at Hungryneck (local), TAYSA (regional), and SCYSA (state). He planned and organized the Yorktown International Soccer tournament which involved The Yorktown aircraft carrier, Boone Hall Plantation and Hungryneck soccer. Known for his great sense of humor, Tucker made friends everywhere he went and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susie of Charleston, SC, two sons, Marion Tucker "Tuck" Altman III of Charleston and Redman Martin "Marty" Harris Altman of Mt. Pleasant; grandchild, Taylor Gauge Tucker Altman of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Patricia Ruth Altman Smith of Columbia, SC; two nieces, Kelli Smith Gowder (Paul) of Columbia, SC and Melanie Smith Hollimon (Jesse) of Rock Hill; grand niece, Brooke Gowder and grand nephew Riley Hollimon. His brother, Michael Lee Altman, preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306, https://t2t.org// or a charity of your choice.
