Marilyn Gwyn McAvoy, 75, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of William Scott McAvoy, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 25, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1519 Sam Rittenburg, Charleston at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday, November 24, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston.
Gwyn was born January 26, 1948 in Tampa, Florida, daughter of the late Frank William Opp and Genevieve Espana Casteleiro. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Gwyn and Scott were married for time and all eternity on January 5, 1972 at the Los Angeles Temple. Their life was filled with joy as they welcomed 8 children into their lives.
Gwyn was a long time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in church callings with the Youth and Primary. She loved being a wife, a mother, and spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to raising 8 children, she cared for numerous children over the years.
She is survived by her husband Scott McAvoy; her children,Scott McAvoy Jr., Christy Magrann, Keith McAvoy, April Provost, Genny Husted, Jaynie Weathers, Erica Burke, Jeremy McAvoy; and her 13 grandchildren, Mya, Chase, Veda, Jeremiah, Brodey, Mason, Kiefer, Jonah, Luke, Finn, Eva, Jackson, and Sarah.
She is also survived by siblings Laura McFerson, Joe Opp, Ginger Cain; and was preceded in death by Jewel Thompson, Betty Bradley, Janice Vance, and Bill Opp. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
