Marguerite Watkins Hutto Randall, 90, formerly of Columbia, died peacefully surrounded by the love of her family and comforted by her faith that death is a transition to a better life. Rita was born in Seneca, SC on February 22, 1925, a daughter of the late Thomas Del Watkins and Mamie Gray Tolbert. She was an avid athlete at Seneca High School and developed a life-long love of the mountains, spending each summer on the Whitewater River in Jocassee.
A graduate of Winthrop College, she attended the Mayo Clinic where she obtained a degree in Physical Therapy. She devoted her life to helping others, working as a Physical Therapist throughout her career including with polio patients, burn patients, recovering adults, disabled children, and the elderly. She especially enjoyed helping children achieve their fullest potential and the elderly maintain their mobility. The SC Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association recognized her with its Outstanding Service Award.
A cancer survivor, she spent many years during her retirement working with cancer patients and was recognized by the American Cancer Society as its Reach to Recovery Volunteer of the Year. She was also devoted to her church, volunteering in many capacities.
Rita was first married for 30 years to the late Albert Dickson Hutto. They had three children: Dr. Harriet Hutto Foster (Gary) of Richmond; Dr. Nancy Hutto Dangerfield (Doug) of Mt. Pleasant; and Thomas D.W. Hutto (Barbara Neale) of Meggett. She took great joy in her grandchildren Katie D. Edwards (Will), Sarah C. Foster (engaged to Nhi Tran), James M. Dangerfield (Maggie) and Alex T. Foster, and great granddaughter Chandler C. Edwards. She was predeceased by her beloved first cousin/adopted brother John Franklin (Jack) Chandler.
After Dick's death Rita married the late Roy Stokes Randall, and they shared 29 happy years together. In addition to her children, Rita is survived by her stepchildren Gail Randall McInnis (John) of Clio, SC and Dr. Bob Randall (Kathy) of Summerville; step grandchildren Beth McInnis (Travis Bell), Haden Milligan (Benjie), and Audie Randall.
The family expresses its sincere gratitude to the wonderful, patient, and selfless caregivers at Ashley River Plantation, the Franke Home, and the Lutheran Hospice. These caregivers are angels in our midst.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 10 a.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Reverend Tom Herrington will officiate. A private burial service will follow at the Williamston, SC Memorial Cemetery.
