Marguerite Valk Reeves Gussenhoven died Monday, January 30, 2023, at age 103.
Born in Charleston on August 11, 1919, she was the daughter of Marguerite Sinkler Valk and Courtney Valk. She was the widow of Edward Bounetheau Reeves, Jr. and Walter Howard Gussenhoven. Mrs. Gussenhoven is survived by her children: Marguerite Sinkler Reeves, Peter Bounetheau Reeves (Marilyn) and Frances Valk Reeves Morrison (Russell); two stepsons: John Gussenhoven (Iryna) and James Gussenhoven. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Gussenhoven was a former board member and Chairman of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, The Women’s Golf Association of the Country Club of Charleston, the Florence Crittenton Home, the SCPA, and the Junior League. She was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Church, having served for many years on the Altar Guild. Mrs. Gussenhoven graduated from Miss Sadie Jervey’s School and Ashley Hall. She attended the College of Charleston where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Mrs. Gussenhoven lived her entire life in Charleston, always feeling pride and love for her hometown. Her later years were spent at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community.
Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 in St. Michael’s Church, 71 Broad Street at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Memorials may be made to The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 1 Carriage Lane, Charleston, SC 29407, or to the charity of one’s choice.
