Margaret Lillian Missel Wilkes

September 30, 1927 — February 4, 2014

Margaret Lillian Missel Wilkes, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of William Wilkes, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 in the Church of the Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Avenue at 3:00 pm. Interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, February 7, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 GLENN MCCONNELL PARKWAY.

Margaret was born September 30, 1927 in Charleston, SC, daughter of the late Charles Henry Missel and Daisy Fischer Missel. She graduated from Chicora High School where she was a spirited member of the cheerleading squad and the basketball team. After graduation she worked as a secretary at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and was an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Margaret was employed for many years as an executive administrative assistant, first in Charleston and later for Ryan Homes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Upon retirement, she returned to Charleston and began volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and other charitable organizations. She was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion and faithfully served on the Altar Guild throughout her life. Margaret was a creative and loving spirit whose generosity and capacity for joy touched all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving children, sons William D. Billy Wilkes, Jr.(Nancy Roth); Alan Perrin Wilkes; daughter Julia Cooper Wilkes; step-grandchildren Jay Jeffers and Abby Jeffers; sisters-in-law Alice Cammer Missel and Myrtle Metts Missel, many beloved nieces, nephews and lifelong loving friends. She is preceded in death by her late husband William, her two brothers, Walter Missel and Charles Missel Jr. and her sister Dee Newton.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to The Church of the Holy Communion (Altar Guild), 218 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403, or to the American Heart Association of SC Memorial and Tributes Processing Center, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
