Margaret Isaacs Mead

Margaret Shirley Isaacs Mead Charleston - Margaret Shirley Isaacs Mead, 95, of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, beloved wife of the late Percy Orian Mead, Jr., went home to her Heavenly Father Saturday, August 18, 2018. Family and friends are invited to attend her visitation Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston SC, 29401. The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at The First Baptist Church of Charleston, 61 Church St, Charleston, SC 29401 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Marshall Blalock presiding. Contributing messages will be provided by long term friends Reverend Clark Carter, Pastor of Portside Baptist Church of North Charleston and Dean of Students at Charleston Southern University as well as Dr. Danny Nicholson, President of Connie Maxwell Children's Home in Greenwood, SC. Burial service will follow at Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave, Charleston, SC 29405.

Margaret, the sixth of six children, was born March 31, 1923 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Mark Isaacs and Freddie Gracie Bunch Hayes. Following graduation from Andrew Jackson HS in 1941, Margaret met her life-long partner and married in 1943.

Margaret traveled 38 of the then 48 states with her husband while he served as an Army-Airforce pilot during and after WW II. They later settled in both Charleston and Berkeley Counties, where the Mead Timber Company was established. They joined the First Baptist Church of Charleston in 1956. In addition to teaching Sunday school, Margaret became a Charleston tour guide new church members. In 1964 Margaret and her husband became co-founders Baptist College at Charleston, currently Charleston Southern University. Margaret's husband "never promised her a rose garden", but gave her one none less. Growing roses became a major hobby, and she joined the Charleston Lowcountry Rose Society, where she eventually rose to the level of consulting rosarian. While she won many awards at various state rose shows, greatest satisfaction was standing back to watch all the "noses in her roses". She loved sharing those hybrid beauties with others and helping novices start their own rose journey.

Margaret loved to cook. Her children knew their friends were always welcomed to join the family for dinner, as "Mama" always prepared more than enough food for everyone seated around her table. (She didn't even mind if a sizzling drum stick or two got taken from the atop the stove before dinner was served).

With her knowledge, patience & wisdom, Margaret taught her children many life lessons, including proper etiquette. She was a true 'Southern Belle' and valued and preserved Southern tradition.

Margaret loved her family and friends and enjoyed music and traveling. She was affectionately called "Mama", "GiGi", "Grandmoma Margaret", "Ma Ma Maggie" and will always be remembered for her gentle and giving spirit, kind heart, helping hand, contagious smile, quick wink, and reassuring words. She always expressed gratitude for the smallest thing anyone ever did for her. Being a wonderful listener and unconditional encourager were two of her most admired and appreciated attributes.

As time will have it, "Ms. Margaret's" body grew delicate, but her spirit remained strong. She continued to receive exceptional loving care from her dedicated caregivers over the past eight years. The family will remain indebted to Harriett Gadsden, Victoria Ravenel, Jacqueline White and Emily Parker for their unconditional love and selfless, tireless efforts, which kept their beloved "Ms. Margaret" feeling happy and secure. The family is also grateful for the fine ongoing care rendered by Roper Hospital, Elms Life Care Center and the many other medical specialists over the past years. We feel all the above likely helped to prolong the life of our dear loved one until the time the Lord came to take her home with Him. While she sorely be missed, she will live on within the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved her. Proverbs 31:26.

Margaret leaves, to cherish her memories, two daughters, Barbara "Binky" Cheryl Mead of Charleston, SC, Carol Mead Koopman (Billy) of Charleston, SC; son, Robert "Bobby" Markley Mead, Sr. (Louisa) of Moncks Corner, SC; daughter-in-law, Patricia K. Mead of Charleston; sister, Carolyn Isaacs Lay; grandchildren, Margaret Jackson (Wayne), P.O Mead, IV (Ashley), Candice K. Lapham, Barbara A. Koopman, Kimberly K. Durham (Jonathan), Amber B. Mead and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to Percy Orian Mead, Jr., her adoring husband of 53 years, Margaret was predeceased in death by her loving parents, Mark Isaacs and Freddie Gracie Bunch Hayes Isaacs; two sisters, Malvena Black Kendrick & Louise Evelyn Isaacs Langston; two brothers, Don Black & Bruce Black, all of Jacksonville FL; son, Percy Orian Mead, III of Charleston, SC; grandson, Robert "Bobby" Markley Mead, Jr. of Moncks Corner, SC.
