Marcelene Kay Borders Nickel, 77, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones after watching Star Trek and sipping on a root beer float February 25, 2025.
Kay was born on November 3rd, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the late Marion and Norma Jean Borders (Hoffman). She leaves behind her younger sister, Mary Sue Baillargeon, IA, husband, Ronald O. Nickel, doting son, Timothy Nickel, beloved daughter, Elisabeth Hyman (Nickel), adored grandsons, Nathan Mitchum, and Jakob Nickel, nephews, Gabriel Baillargeon and Daniel Borders. She is preceded by her Marine Corp brother, Steve Borders, and parrot loving nephew, Christopher Borders.
Kay had a full and vast, personal and professional life spanning over 50 plus years from apprenticing in gemology, dry cleaning, and seamstress to award winning vocalist, ASCP medical technologist, phlebotomist and highly esteemed professor at Trident Technical College. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and birds at the Iowa Parrot Rescue, Green Square Meals food bank, Charleston Symphony Chorus (CSO Chorus), and Eastbridge Presbyterian Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on May 10th, 2025, 11 am at Eastbridge Presbyterian Church located at 1250 Lexington Dr. Mount Pleasant SC 29466. Arrangements are being made by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
