Mamie Gay Bailey Powell, 86, of North Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Capers Verel Powell, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 1, 2014. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL at 11 a.m. Interment, Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel, 2280 Greenridge Road, North Charleston, SC.
Mrs. Powell was born September 25, 1927 in Dorchester County, SC, daughter of Lemuel Thomas Bailey and Argent Zethalee Fralix Bailey Padgett. She was a graduate of Lodge High School. She worked at GARCO, Bird and Son Roofing and Certainteed Roofing. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church. She was a past member of Ferndale Baptist Church, where she nurtured the children in the nursery for 20 years. She was a Christian, a loving mother and a woman who cared for many people who were in need. She enjoyed crocheting and will always be remembered by each family member and many friends for whom she crocheted afghans.
She is survived by her children, Faye P. Winter and Larry V. Powell both of Summerville, SC; four grandchildren, Mikki Bowman (Demsey) , Laurie W. Lamar (Jason) , Susan W. White (William) and Johnathan D. Carpenter; six great grandchildren, Ashley Lange, Trey Harvey, Aiken and Bailey Lamar, Mikayla and Madelyn White; five great great grandchildren, Mikayla Harvey, James, Nathan, Payton and Lucas Lange; brother, Doyle Bailey (Liz) of Colorado; niece and friend, Midge Laird and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years; daughter, Patricia G. Singletary; son, Gregory Morris Powell; son-in-law, Aiken Winters and daughter-in- law, Sharon Powell.
