Entered into eternal rest Sunday, Major Herbert Lamar Day, USMC (Ret.), husband of Patricia Ann Vaughn Day.  Residence, Charleston, SC.  The relatives and friends of Major and Mrs. Herbert Lamar Day are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 11:00 am in The Summeral Chapel, The Citadel. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, Tuesday between five and seven o'clock.


Major Day was born July 20, 1942 in Chattanooga, TN, the son of William Eugene Day and Lizzie Lee Houston Day.  He retired after 22 years from US Marine Corps. He also retired from The Citadel as Director of Regimental Band and Pipes. Major Day served as Director of Music at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina for more than twenty years.  Under his direction, The Citadel Band received international acclaim and earned the reputation as one of the world's premier military college bands. 


Prior to joining the faculty at The Citadel, Major Day enjoyed a career with the United States Marine Corps Music Program.  During his military career he served as an instrumentalist, conductor, and Commanding Officer of the Marine Element, Armed Forces School of Music.  In 1978, he was appointed Director of The Marine Field Band and Drum and Bugle Program in Washington, DC and served in that position until his retirement from active duty. 


Major Day began his musical career in the public schools of Chattanooga, TN under the direction of Mr. A.R. Casavant.  He holds degrees from Saint Leo College and is a member of numerous professional organizations.  Major Day has been awarded the Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association, The A. Austin Harding Award by the American School Band Directors Association, the Outstanding Bandmasters Award by the International Bandmasters Fraternity, Phi Beta Mu, honorary member of The Washington Light Infantry and the Order of the Palmetto, the state of South Carolina's highest civilian award for his dedicated service to music education and the band of America. 


He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; daughter: Dawn Day Volpe (Matthew) of Atlanta, GA; son: Herbert Scott Day (Ana Sofia) of San Diego, CA; sister: Mary Ann Givens of Rossville, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Larry and Terri Lowrance of Rossville, GA; two grandchildren: Braxton and Peyton.  


Memorials may be made to The Herbert L. Day Regimental Band Scholarship Fund, c/o The Citadel, 171 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29409.
