Mae Helen Withers, 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Chester McComb Withers entered into eternal rest Wednesday, February 20, 2019. A wake will be held Friday, March 1, 2019 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnel Parkway from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Her funeral service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019 in Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 7936 Rivers Avenue at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
Mae was born January 12, 1930 in Como, Mississippi, daughter of the late Andrew Virgil and Roberta Boyce Virgil. She was active in the community, having volunteered in the library at McClellanville Middle School, the West Ashley Learning Hub and the former Charleston Naval Hospital. Mae was a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and the former Charleston Naval Base Chapel. She was a dedicated naval wife who loved her family and children and enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by two sons: Chester McComb Withers, Jr. of Charleston, SC and Steve Withers (Flora) of Charleston, SC; eight daughters: Diane Nicholas (Randolph) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Imogene Raynor (Thomas) of Hanahan, SC, Gunny Sgt. Joyce Withers (Ret.) of Woodbridge, VA, Pamela Faulkner (Melvin) of Odenton, MD, Patty Withers of Columbia, SC, Helen Withers-Ross (Ellis) of Charleston, SC, Kathy Storey (Robert) of Jacksonville, FL and Melanie Kynard (Calyes Kynard II) of Gainesville, VA; sister, Rosie Mae Howard of Cleveland, OH; brother-in-law, Major Withers of Cleveland, OH; sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Knox of Battle Creek, MI; 17 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
