Luther Lamar "Smitty" Smith, 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Virginia Lein Smith entered into eternal rest Sunday, May 25, 2014. The Celebration of Smitty's life will be held Friday, May 30, 2014 in Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Luther was born August 21, 1924 in Hopewell, Virginia, son of the late Henry Fosque Smith and Margaret Vickman Smith. Luther served our country with the Coast Guard during WWII and also served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was an Engineering Technician with the Navy Shipyard, a pitcher for his Church Softball team, member of Adult Bowling leagues, and also an active member in his church. Luther was one of the founding members of Sycamore Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Lein Smith; four Daughters, Janine Heydrick (Bob) of Casselberry, FL, Rebecca Smith (Don) of Moncks Corner, SC, Paula Kennedy of N. Charleston, SC, Lillian Davis (Ralph) of N. Charleston; two Sons, Stephen Smith (June) of Goose Creek, SC, Daniel Smith (Camille) of James Island, SC; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Luther is preceded in death by his son, Mathew Smith and grandson, Jonathan Kennedy.
