Luke J Braxmeier

April 16, 1917 — November 11, 2011

Dr. Luke J. Braxmeier, widowed husband of the late Sarah Ruppert, entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 11, 2011 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount, NC. The family and friends of Dr. Braxmeier are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goose Creek, on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 11am. Interment with military honors will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 13th between 5 and 7pm with a 6pm prayer service at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston, SC.

Luke Jacob Braxmeier was born in Mandan, ND, on April 16, 1917, to Conrad and Margareta (Weber) Braxmeier. He was the youngest of four children. He graduated from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks with a B.S. in Chemistry, and then earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Iowa in June of 1945, marrying Sarah Ruppert, a nursing student at University of Iowa in 1944. He joined the Navy in 1949 practicing Dentistry until retiring from active duty as LCDR USN in 1955. He completed his post graduate training at Bethesda Naval Hospital and did his residency in Oral Surgery at USNH Great Lakes, Illinois. He had a private practice in Beach, ND and Perry, Iowa and joined the medical staff at Woodward State Hospital. He and Sarah retired and moved to Goose Creek, SC in 1980.

Luke's hobbies included bird hunting, playing cards at the Elks Club, growing roses, crossword puzzles and reading. A member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church he volunteered as a lector, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered at the local public schools in Goose Creek to tutor students in reading. He was active at the Goose Creek senior center and member of the Berkeley County Friends of the library.

Wife Sarah preceded Luke in death in 1999.

Left behind to cherish his memory are son, James Braxmeier of Winston-Salem, NC, (daughter-in-law) Lexa Braxmeier of Myrtle Beach, SC, daughter, Carol and her husband David Hulsey of Battleboro, NC. Three grandchildren, Alecia, Tyler and Ashley. Also a sister, Ludmilla Cole of Rolla, MO and Bob Ruppert (Brother-in law) and his wife Della of Iowa City, Iowa.
