Lucile Harvey Murphy entered into eternal rest on December 25, 2012 in Lexington, SC where she had moved several years ago. The service will be held Friday, December 28, 2012 at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
She was the widow of George Archie Murphy and a resident of Charleston Heights and Hanahan, South Carolina for many years. She was born in Berkeley County on October 2, 1913 and was a life-long resident of South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late James Marion Harvey and Josephine West Harvey. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.
She is survived by two sons, James Marshall Murphy (wife Sarah Conyers Murphy) of Columbia, S.C., and George William Murphy (wife Sandra Hanold Murphy) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; four grandchildren, Jay Murphy of Alpharetta, Ga., Kristine Murphy Smith of New Smyrna Beach, Fl., David Murphy of Chesapeake, Va. , and Bill Murphy, of Boston, Massachusetts. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, one sister, Gladys H. Knight of Summerville, SC as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Murphy retired from the U. S. Postal Service after 25 years as a clerk in the Charleston area. She was a member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church for more than 75 years. She served Cherokee is many capacities including Superintendent of the Children's Division; teacher of the church's Sunday school kindergarten; was a member of the Bradley Bible and the Boone Bowen Sunday School Class. Very active in the United Methodist Women, she served as chairperson of the Frances Major circle for more than ten years. She was a major participant, supporter and organizer in the church's annual fundraising effort during its bazaar.Mrs. Murphy served as President of Chicora Graded School PTA for three years while her sons were in that school. She was also a member of NARFE and AARP. In her youth, she was very active in the 4H Club in Berkeley County where she received many honors.After retirement, she did volunteer work with the American Red Cross and was recognized in 1980 for the number of hours of service she gave to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.Among her many other interests, she enjoyed her church, friends and family. She especially enjoyed her four grandchildren's visit with her for a week each summer and for ten years at a family reunion each summer after they were grown.
