Entered into eternal rest on the evening of January 23, 2011 Lt. Colonel Kenneth Reed Waggoner, USAF (Retired), husband of Norma Barber Waggoner. Residence, Charleston, South Carolina. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Waggoner are invited to attend the funeral services of the former Friday, January 28, 2011 at 2 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
Lt. Colonel Waggoner was born May 23, 1925 in Washington, Indiana, son of the late Archie and Nellie King Waggoner. Kenneth enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and satisfactorily completed the cadet exam in the spring of 1943. He was called to active duty, after graduating from Washington High School, September 11, 1943. He served during World War II and the Korean Conflict and Piloted the following aircrafts: PT-19's, BT-13's, AT-6's, T-6's, F-51's, F-80's, Single Engine Jet T-33's, F-28's, C-45's, C-46's, C-47's, C-119G's, and B-47E's. His final assignment was at the Charleston Air Force Base with the 437th Military Airlift Wing (MAC) 3rd MAS, where he flew the C-124 and C-141. He retired June 1, 1970 with over 10,000 safe flying hours which included the first non-stop, non-fueling flight from Yokota AFB, Japan, to Charleston AFB, SC in 14 hours and 10 minutes in a C-141. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 4 OLC's, Air Force Commendation Medal with 1 OLC, AF Outstanding Unit Award with 1 OLC, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Battle Stars, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 3 OLC's, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and also received a complimentary letter on Presidential/Support Mission to Bucharest, Romania-C141 for President Nixon, and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his wife Norma Waggoner of Charleston; four children, Diana Hardwick of Washington, IN, Pamela Apperson (husband Courtney) of Ravenglass, England, Lana Truitt (husband Dr. Thomas) of Aiken, SC, Gary Waggoner (wife Paula) of Panama City, Panama; nine grandchildren, Heather Cuajunco (husband Tony), Andrea Neal, Eric Hardwick, Craig Hansel (wife Kellie), Stephanie Hansel, Courtney Nicholson (husband J.C.), Scott Truitt, Brian Waggoner, and Cameron Waggoner; eight great grandchildren, Jordan Butler, Allison Neal, Haley Neal, Presley Cuajunco, Reed Cuajunco, Grant Hansel, Alexander Hansel, Colson Hardwick; two nieces, Anita Chichadantz of Fort Wayne, IN and Phyllis Villimil of San Juan Capistrano, CA; a nephew, Charles Waggoner of Indianapolis, IN. Mr. Waggoner was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Waggoner and Roy Waggoner and three sisters, Ruth Kindred, Violet Bayles, and Louise Waggoner.
